Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
The cost of burial at ASNBA is $3,500. This includes opening and closing the grave and a natural stone that members may choose to have engraved.
How deep are the graves?
A natural burial site uses a shallow grave, about 3-4 feet deep. This facilitates decomposition of the remains and is deep enough to protect the remains from animals.
What kind of grave markers are used?
The site is marked with a ground level native stone that may be engraved. Each grave site is recorded by its unique GPS coordinates.
Does a funeral home prepare the body?
Your loved ones can use a local funeral home to pick up, clean, and prepare the body for burial without embalming. They will deliver the body to the burial site in a biodegradable container or shroud.
Does a funeral home have to prepare the body?
No. Friends and family may choose to organize a care team to carry out the wishes of the deceased in the home with or without funeral home services. Education is available for those wishing to learn more - contact Deborah Parker (336-327-2482 | deborahparker57@gmail.com) for more information on how to conduct a vigil and/or funeral at home.
How can the family participate in the burial?
Families members may bring cut flowers to lay in or on the grave, help lower their loved one into their resting place, and fill in the grave.
What should guests wear?
Please recommend that guests wear appropriate shoes for rough terrain. Rain gear and warm clothing is also recommended, depending on the weather.
How accessible are the grave sites?
The terrain is a bit uneven. We have a golf cart for family members or guests who need assistance getting to the grave site.
How do we get a death certificate?
Working with a funeral home to prepare a death certificate is the easiest and quickest way to receive one.
Do you bury cremains?
No, we do not bury cremains. Cremation is not a natural process. Cremains do not integrate into the living environment of the soil.
